Creative Curriculum
Year 9 Curriculum 2019-20
Our Academy curriculum has been designed to meet the needs and abilities of children and families whom we serve. Our central aim is to meet their needs and aspirations, allowing our pupils to flourish socially and academically, during and beyond their time at Manshead CE Academy.
To meet the needs of all students, the third year of our Key Stage 3 Curriculum will have students studying these subjects with these allocated hours of study per week.
Maths, English and Science | Ethics | Core PE | Languages* | History and Geography | Computing | PDE |
4 hours per subject | 2 hours | 2 hours | 2 hours | 1 hour per subject | 1 hour |
1 hour |
*Some students have additional Maths and/or English to accelerate their literacy and numeracy knowledge.
One difference for students as they move into Year 9 will be the introduction of an individualised curriculum that has strong support for the ‘creative curriculum’ through the performing arts, design technology and 21st century creation for all students in Year 9.
To develop this individualised curriculum, students will choose which ‘creative curriculum’ pathway they would like to follow in their final year of Key Stage 3. This pathway will allow students to study subjects of enjoyment whilst also enhancing their knowledge of the world around them and their creative and practical skills.
To develop their own pathway each student will select their own curriculum by picking one subject from each creative area and also having one free choice from any of the three areas. Each one of these subjects will then have an hour per week of study.
Performing Arts | Art and Design Technology
|
21st Century Creation |
Drama
Music |
Art and Design
Food Technology Textiles |
Enterprise
Media Sports Performance Or students can select one of the options from Performing Arts or Art and Design Technology* |
*To ensure a broad and balanced curriculum it advised that students only pick Textiles or Art and Design as part of their 3 option choices
Students will then work towards a creative showpiece that will take place in the summer term. This will involve all students showcasing their best creative work through an Art and Technology gallery, a Drama and Music performance, sporting display, media display and an enterprise fayre where we will invite local employers to discuss with the students their enterprise work.
To help students make their choices students should consider the information from each subject below, the subjects that they enjoy and those they may wish to study at Key Stage 4. Whilst studying a subject in year 9 enhances a student’s understanding and knowledge in that subject, Choices made for year 9 will not restrict which subject can be studied at KS4 (Years 10 and 11) – students will be able to choose subject for year 10 even if they do not opt to study them in year 9
We would like students to complete the Year 9 Curriculum form by Thursday 14th May please. We do recognise that this is a short time frame yet if students are given choices regarding subjects too early it can cause disengagement and a lack of motivation in the subjects they are not continuing with. Also, as Key Stage Three and Year 9 study is about a love of learning and an enhancement of knowledge, we really want students to pick subjects that they know they will enjoy and have a passion for, to aid development of their creative skills.
If you would like to speak to someone about this please feel free to email creativecurriculum@mansheadschool.co.uk.
This is the address that the form needs to be returned to or it can be posted back to school.
