Music is valued at Manshead and the standard of music in curriculum time and in our extra-curricular programme is a great source of pride. At all Key Stages, we aspire for our pupils to become creative, self-confident individuals, with a passion for Music of all types.
Key Stage 3
Studying composing, performing, listening and appraising skills, our focus is on practical music making activities. In Year 7 and 8 students study musical concepts through a variety of styles of Music and Music making activities.
In Year 9 a GCSE Music “Lite” programme is delivered to prepare students for GCSE Music
Key Stage 4
At GCSE music performing, composing and appraising all continue at a higher level. Pupils study set works in different areas of music answering questions as part of their listening exam, which is worth 40%. Pupils perform on their chosen instrument, in preparation for a final solo and ensemble performance which contributes to 30% of the final grade. Pupils also compose, making up the final 30% of the GCSE.
Key Stage 5
Builds on GCSE, A level Music (Edexcel syllabus) provides plenty of opportunity for pupils to perform, compose and learn about musical analysis and harmony, whilst also building up their skills to advanced level.
Extra Curricular Music
The department provides opportunities for students to participate in many groups within school and the local community. Choirs, Wind Band, Orchestra and Pop ensembles all regularly rehearse and perform.
